With truck-loads of that "Basement Rock" AND some "Dancefloor Justice" there’s plenty of tracks "on that smooth tip" as this is a Saturday night Capital Dance Show . Check the TL for World Premieres of EPMD and Roxanne Shante, some Teddy Riley productions and some Teddy Riley remixes. Tim refers to EPMD’s DJ as DJ K La Rock, plays NWA at the wrong speed and describes them as "The LA Gang members," he shouts Mikey D from Blackmarket Records who was...

This one's an interesting episode of Funkin' Lessons . It kicks off  with Blaze playing a mish mash of hip-hop tracks, movie dialog including Godzilla, and excerpts from Pete Rock & Marley Marl's Future Flavas show. Additionall, it includes a segment of Hot 97 Home Jams  from NYC which featured all unsigned artists' demos. Bobbito guested on this particular segment.

This was recorded in Los Angeles when I was with Portishead for a show at The American Legion Hall on 18 April 1995. This is the The Julio G Mixmasters Ruthless Rap Radio show with Tony G. Eric 'Eazy E' Wright had died on 26 March 1995 and it seems like they were still in 'tribute' mode to him it only being a few weeks since he'd passed hence a fair few Eazy jams on here at the start. - DJ Andy Smith

This was a one-time fill-in show for hosts Laze ( Sounds from the Attic ) and Bernie ( Weekend At Bernie's ) on 540 AM WMWC in November of their freshman year (1994) at Mary Washington College. Laze and Bernie both lived in Mason Hall, but on different floors. The episode aired from 4-6pm and featured a mishmash of music styles that you could only hear on a college radio fill-in show where the hosts weren't necessarily aware the other would even be there. Call-in from Sye.

This is an episode on from pirate radio Kiss 95.3 FM in London, hosted by none other than eventual-Profile Records-signee Derek B (RIP). He was one of the first UK rappers to really break out, hit the national charts and he get signed in the US. He was featured on a Mr Magic Rap Attack compilation. At this point, he appears to still be known as Derek Boland - or on one advert on the tape Derek 'Del Boy' Boland. The show is called The Good Groove Show, which shared its name with his third...

With a heavy heart and troubling happenstance, I'm posting this notably rare interview with Andre Harrell, from almost 3 decades ago. It’s a Capital Rap Show from May 1991. The sad events of this last week have been difficult enough for anyone from the UK Rap community [Our thoughts and love go out to the entire Chijioke family and to everyone that knew TY. He was an admirable musician, a trailblazer, a funny warm-hearted guy and an all-round good soul] but to learn of the passing of one of...

As far as 90s shows went, it was kind of unusual for Tim to have guests from outside of the East Coast. Off the back of the success of No Limit and Cash Money in the US, other rappers from the South started getting some attention and depending on who they signed with, had the opportunity to venture overseas to do a bit of promo work. I'm guessing that when JT Money inked his deal he didn't envisage rocking Huddersfield Uni but apparently this actually happened, although I'm told his London gig...

Having missed most of them when they aired, I'm really enjoying these New York Live shows with Westwood and Marley Marl. The guests and tunes tend to be a bit more varied than what you'd hear Flex playing on the Hot 97 Rap Exchanges. Lots going on in this one with Starang of OGC and Cormega guesting in part one, and then Deadly Venoms (an all female group that included N Tyce and who were briefly affiliated with the Wu), Screwball and DJ S&S appear in part two. All of them get together for...

Three hours of Flex here and he's actually in the UK, hyping things up for Tim's jam the following night. He kicks things off cutting up some breaks, throws on some new bits (Jay Z, Nas, Nore, Mobb Deep etc) and then into some 90s classics in part 2. Part One The Incredible Bongo Band - Apache Herman Kelly & Life - Dance to the Drummer’s Beat Bobby Byrd - I Know You Got Soul Syl Johnson - Different Strokes Freedom - Get Up and Dance Bob James - Take Me to the Mardi Gras The Whole Darn...

Here's the recording of the 1996 Carnival broadcast, which I think takes in Sunday and Monday's performances. If I recall correctly, it was broadcast on Monday evening, and the swears are edited so it's not live and direct from the Westway. Westwood and Goldfinger hold down the selection with live performances by Heltah Skeltah, Lost Boyz, Blak Twang, Foxy Brown (who had no solo records at this point but was killing every feature) and Montell Jordan. Highlights include Foxy having to back track...

This one features Jeru and Mad Lion performing at Carnival and Westwood and his crew running through a ton of rap, ragga, miami bass and R&B. Whistles and horns are in full effect and the reactions to certain tunes really let you know what was big on the street at the time, as opposed to an extensive twitter debate with William from Worcestershire who's adamant everyone was listening to Outkast and Jay Z back then and GZA and Smoothe Da Hustler was just some backpack shit. - DJ Step One

Freestyles were a regular part of rap radio by 1997 but this is like a Mr Bongo regular's wet dream. It's a 37-minute freestyle session on Sway & Tech's Wake Up Show from late 1997 and the line up is immense. Kool G Rap, Craig G, Juice, Shorty Wreck, Eminem, Kwest Tha Madd Lad, Thirstin Howl, Wordsworth & Mos Def and Talib Kweli all step up and do their thing. A lot of those names were new on the scene at the time so there's definitely an element of hungry MCs with something to prove...

This is the show with Eminem and Proof rhyming over "Hate Me Now" and Redman's "Pick It Up," with recordings of Em's crank calls in between. This is around the time The Slim Shady LP dropped so he wasn't a full on superstar at this point. I had the full 3 hour show originally and posted the freestyle session back when I first started this blog back in 2009, and again in the piece I did for Nah Right in 2014. Even though I didn't catch many of them at the time, I'm starting to think that Westwood's New York Live shows with Marley are better than his Rap Exchange shows with Flex. I imagine the #bantz was in full flow. Part 1 features Truck Turner and DJ S&S and part 2 features Black Moon and Jeru. - DJ...
